The Virginia is American state on the Atlantic Coast of the Southern United States. Virginia state is known as the "Old Dominion" and sometimes as "Mother of Presidents" because it is the birthplace of eight U.S. presidents.

Early colonizing attempts 1584–1587 by Sir Walter Raleigh failed, but in 1607 colonists dispatched by London Company established the first permanent settlement at Jamestown in May 13. In 1781 Virginia was a prime force in the move for independence and was the site of Lord Cornwallis's surrender. Virginia seceded in April 1861 and was the scene of many major battles during the Civil War, including the final campaigns that led to the surrender of Gen. Robert E. Lee. Richmond is the capital and Virginia Beach the largest city. Population of Virginia 7,710,000.
Virginia is bordered by Maryland to the northeast, North Carolina and Tennessee to the south, Kentucky to the west, West Virginia to the northwest and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Located on the central Atlantic seaboard, it covers an area of 40,600 sq mi, its capital is Richmond.

An economy that is highly diversified. Agriculture once its mainstay, that now follows other sectors in the employment and income generation. Tobacco Virginia's traditional staple, is still the leading crop, and grains, corn, soybeans, peanuts, sweet potatoes, cotton, and apples in the Shenandoah Valley. Virginia was one of the first states to plant grapes and make wines. Starting in the 1773, Thomas Jefferson made repeated attempts to grow vitis vinifera vines on his estate Monticello. In the end of the nineteenth century, Virginia was one of the more important wine producing areas in the United States.
Climate of Virginia varies depending on the location. Most of the state east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, as well as the southern part of the Shenandoah Valley, to the Atlantic coast has a humid subtropical climate. This climate becomes increasingly warmer farther south and east in the state. Virginia is divided into the independent cities and counties, which function in the same manner. Virginia economy is very well balanced with many diverse sources of the income, made up of 4.1 million civilian workers. Virginia had the highest number of counties in the top one hundred wealthiest jurisdictions in the United States based upon median income.

Culture of Virginia was popularized and spread across America and the South by Washington, Jefferson and Lee and their homes represent Virginia as the birthplace of America and of the South. Virginia State Fair is held at the Richmond International Raceway in the september. The September Neptune festival in Virginia Beach celebrates the city, the waterfront and the regional artists. Norfolks Harborfest in June, features boat racing and air shows.
